The favourable impression created by the unemployment figures lor August is strengthened by this week’s Exchequer returns, which show that tho total ordinary revenue, excluding self-bal-ancing items, amounts to £255,596,164, as compared with £246,358,069 tor tile corresponding date last year. Income tax receipts are £24,396,000, as against £48,707,000 last year, and the total inland revenue is £103,786,000, as compared with £101,421,000, wmle the total revenue from Customs and excise is £129,130,000 as against £1H4,«14,000 for the same period oi the last financial year. Another sign of trade improvement is in the Pose Office receipts under the heading of selt-baJancing revenue, which are £25,150,000—£2,000,000 more than in the previous year. The total ordinary expenditure, exclusive of self-balancing items, is £013.118,900, as against £297,745,041 for the corresponding date in 1934.

RISE IN NUMBERS

(British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, Sept. 9. The progressive rise in the numbers in employment and the fall in the numbers of unemployed continued in August. Since January. 1935, there has been a decrease in the number of unemployed of over 377,000 and, in the whole period since 1921 —the first yeai for which comparable statistics are available —the reduction of the last seven months has been exceeded only m the corresponding periods of 1922 and 1923.

Tho Ministry of Labour estimates that at August 26 there were approximately 10,424,000 insured jiersons aged from 16 to 64 in employment in G. eat Britain. This was 43.000 more than at July 22 and 244,000 more than a year before. At the same date the numbers of unemployed persons on the registers in Britain totalled 1,947,964, comprising 1,533,259 wholly unemployed, 334,419 temporarily laid off and 80,286 normally in casual employment. Tho total was 24,977 less than at July 22 and 188,614 less than a year before. The month of August always shows an increase iii the number of juveniles unemployed, which is accounted ior by the registration of boys and girls who left scliool at the end of tho summer term. Last month there was an increase of nearly 22,000 in the nuinbei of unemployed juveniles, owing mainly to this cause and, allowing for that increase, the number of unemployed men and women actually decreased nearly 47,000.
