DANNEVIRKE.

DANNEVIRKE, Sept. 10

A sitting of the No. 6 Transport Licensing Authority was held in Dannevirke yesterday and to-day, Mr G. A. Troup presiding. J. 15. Tyler (Pongaroa) was granted a renewal and A. J. Stinson (Pongaroa) a new license to operate in the Akitio, Weber, Dannevirke, and Paliiatna counties. The applicant is now allowed to pick up or set down goods in Weber, Paliiatua and Dannevirke, except at railway stations. S. Liggins, Uanneyirke, applied for a license to cart pigs in the VVaipawa, Woodville and Dannevirke counties. The license was refused. C. D. Jackson, Norsewood, was granted an extension of his license, to include Woodville, for the carting, of hobby calves. " - A concert of a high standard was presented at the Town Hall, last evening, by the Dannevirke Orchestral Society, assisted by Miss M. Sawyer and Mr Iv. Gillespie. The Dannevirke Chamber of Commerce met last evening, MV V. F. B. Rogers presiding. A letter was received from the Dannevirke A. and 11.l 1 . Association asking the chamber to appoint a representative on the general committee. Mr Rogers was appointed to represent the chamber. Lengthy correspondence was received from the provisional committee, Hasings, in reference to the proposed geological soil survey in Hawke’s Bay to be undertaken by the Government. The president said this was an important matter, . and suggested that the chamber co-operate with the A. and P. Association, the Farmers’ Union, dairy companies, and local bodies in the province in any action taken by then;. He moved accordingly. The motion was seconded by Mr H. Selwyn Dawc, and carried. The president mentioned that the Dannevirke Borough Council had decided to extend the commercial area in connection with the town planning scheme. Mr D. A. P. McKenzie said he did not feel fully satisfied, and thought the area could be further extended. However, he would leave the matter where it was in the meantime. The president said there would probably be a further meeting before the scheme was finally adopted. The president referred to. the congestion at the money order counter at the Post Office on busy days. He had interviewed the postmaster on the matter, and now understood that this would be obviated in the future. Mr L. Stein brought up the question of community lighting, and enquired when something would be done by the committee which had the matter in hand. The president replied that the committee had obtained a great deal of information from other towns in regard to community lighting, and would meet shortly and bring down a report for the chamber. A pretty wedding was solemnised in the Carterton Methodist Church on the evening of Saturday, August 24, by Rev. H. White, when Ivy Myrtle, youngest daughter of Mr W. H. Shiite, of Rua Roa, and the late Mrs Shute, was married to Henry, eldest son of Mr and Mrs L. O. Sayer, of Masterton. Mrs R. Calverly, of Heriot. South Otago, is spending a few days in Dannevirke with Mrs J. Dobson. Miss B. Swenson, who has been staying in Dannevirke with. Mr and Mrs J. Grant, left yesterday on her return to Wairoa. Miss A. M. McLay, Dominion organiser of the AV.C.T.U., is on a visit to Dannevirke, and is staying for a few days with Mr and Mrs i H. G. Lee.
