SCHOOL COMMITTEES

MONTHLY MEETINGS. CENTRAL SCHOOL. The monthly meeting of tlie Central School Committee was held last evening, those present being Messrs W. G. Black (chairman), D. Dickie, F. G. Major, A. E. Iverslake, W. Garden, L. D. Simmonds, G. Farrar and IV. H. Cadivallader (secretary). An apology, for absence was received from Mr F. Cousins.

The secretary of the Wanganui Education Board advised tliat Miss E. M. Bland would commence her duties as assistant mistress at the school on September 9. The writer' also advised that Miss Mary Thompson had been appointed relieving assistant during the absence of Mr Litligow on sick leave. —The leLters were received.

The C. and C. Swimming Club (a new organisation) wrote asking lor the use of the school baths on two nights a week. —It was agreed that the request be acceded to on certain conditions, an arrangement to be arrived at between the G. and C. Club and the Central Swimming Club as to the nights on which the C. and C. Club should use the pool. The chairman reported that arrangements had been made for the painting of the baths with a special preparation, and his action was confirmed. It was decided that the work be carried out as soon as possible. The report of the headmaster (Mr E. Bary), which was adopted, stated that the average attendance in the previous term had been 717 and the average weekly roll 776. In the term 85 pupils had been admitted and 6-1 withdrawn. For tho current term the regulations allowed the admittance of children who would be six years of age on or before February 2, 1936, on the condition that they were admitted in the first four weeks of tho term. Parents who did not take advantage of the opportunity would have to wait until their children attained the age of six years before they could be admitted. At the close of the previous term Miss Ashby had left the staff to accept a position at Milson. Her place had been tilled by the transfer of Miss Bland from Terrace End. Miss Morgan, who had been relieving in Mr Lithgow’s place, had been transferred to Carnarvon. Mr Litligow had been expected to report for duty on Monday, but owing to a relapse had been unable to do so. Miss W. A. Valentine, supervisor of special classes, had visited the school, to carry out special investigations, on Monday and Tuesday. Mr L. H. Nesbit, Australian Trade Commissioner, and his assistant, Mr Payne, had visited tlie school on August 20 and had entertained the standard classes with cinema pictures of Australian liie and industries. The kindness shown b.y these two gentlemen had been very much appreciated by the scholars. A cup had been forwarded by the Kia Toa Rugby Football Club to be presented to the school player who had shown the most improvement in the season. An award .would be made in due course. The annual concert had proved to be one of high merit and from a financial aspect also had been successful. The aggregate amount taken had been £36 Is 6d, and after some expenses had been paid the sum of £3l Os lOd had been lodged to the credit of the committee. The chairman said the concert had been of a very high-standard and the return liad been the best since tlie school had had the assembly hall. On his suggestion a comprehensive motion of appreciation of the work of the teachers, the assistance given by others, and the generous attendance by the parents, was carried. On the motion of the chairman, it was agreed to forward an expression of sympathy to Mr iLtligow in his continued indisposition. Messrs F. Cousins and G. Farrar were appointed the visiting committee for the ensuing month.

It was decided to write to the Kia Toa Club expressing the committees’ thanks for the gift of the cup.

It was reported that Mr A. AV. Just had donated two dozen antirrhinums to the school, and it was decided to thank Mr Just lor the gift.

TERRACE END SCHOOL

DENTAL CLINIC FauuuITIES TO

BE PROVIDED

The monthly meeting cf the Terrace End .School Committee was held last evening, Mr IV. B. Tennent presiding. Also present were Messrs C. It. Luke, It. C. Donald, E. G. Bennett, J. H. Nash and H. Blackwood (secretary). Apologies for absence were received from Messrs J. Davidson, J. K. Patou and IV. A. Peterson.

The headmaster (Mr A. IV.' Thompson) reported that the past term had ended with an average attendance of 554.3 out of an average roll of 609.1. Tliis average, together with the average for the two previous terms, give an average attendance for the year of 586, being 15 short of the number required to retain the present staff. In consequence Miss E. M. Bland had been transferred to the Central School, and the classes had been reorganised. So far this term 20 new entrants had been enrolled. It might not be generally known that if a child became six years of age before February 2, 1936, it might now be admitted. The roll number was now 620. The inspectors’ report on the annual examination was appended, the headmaster adding that it was pleasing; to note that the general efficiency of the school was maintained as excellent. The average attendance at the Hospital class for the past term was 11-2 out of an average roll of 11.9. The roll to-dav was 9. —Congratulations were extended to the headmaster and staff on the school being again graded as excellent, for the sixth year in succession. A motion of sympathy was passed with Mr E. I<\ Hemingway (chairman of the Wanganui Education Board) in his recent bereavement. The Wanganui Education Board advised that a cowl would be placed on a chimney to obviate a smoke nuisance complained of.—lt was reported that the work had not yet been earned out and the matter is to be referred again to the board. The Education Board advised that the committee’s audited cash book had not yet been forwarded to the board. —To be sent forward. The board formally notified that the school having fallen in attendance Miss E.. M. Bland was being transferred to the Central School, and Miss D. Meldrum would return to the school as a relieving additional assistant. Later, however, the board advised that Miss Mcldruni would take up duties at College Street. —Received. Miss D. Meldrum wrote acknowledging the committee’s letter of appreciation of her services when recently acting at Terrace End as a relieving teacher.

The town clerk of Pahiatua asked for information regarding the manner in which the committee painted or lined the school baths, as his council was considering such work on the Pahiatua baths.—The information is to be supplied. A capitation lodgment of £7O 13s 4d was notified by the board.—Received. It was reported that a big tree on a property on the school boundary had come down in a recent gale and broken part of the fence. Repairs are

to be put in hand immediately by arrangement with the property owner. It was reported that the dental clinic at College Street School was being closed, and the Dental Clinic Committee was desirous of placing the clinic at Terraco End School if a room were available. Mr Thompson said that facilities could be given and it was decided to notify the Clinic Committee to this effect.

Messrs Patou and Nash were appointed tlie visiting committee for next month.
