BENEFICIAL RAIN

FALL IN CANTERBURY. Per Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, Sept. 9. The increasing anxiety of farmers at the prolonged absence of ram was completely relieved to-day, when a copious fall occurred practically throughout the province. The rain started to fall between 5 and 6 o’clock in the morning, and continued uninterruptedly throughout the day, and at latest advices in the evening it was still falling, though not so heavily as before.

In some districts the fall ranged from ljin. in Mid-Canterbury to 3jin., the latter quantity having fallen at Waikari. The rain'was heaviest in North Canterbury, where it was most needed.

The fall was accompanied by a low temperature in most districts, and, as lambing is now general, losses of lambs born during the downpour are probable.
