SIR MALCOLM CAMPBELL.

HIS GOAL ATTAINED. ERROR EXPLAINED. WENDOVER (Utah), Sept. 3. When the American Automobile Association Official Contest Board announced that Sir Malcolm Campbell had averaged 301.337 miles per hour, explaining that the. previous time of 299.875 m.p.h. was an error due to miscalculation, it was stated that the computation of figures taken from the timing tape, as well as the timing tape itself, showed an error of .10 of a second in subtraction. In order that it should be clearly understood just how the error was made, the control board of tlie A.A.A. gives the following explanation:—The run northward over the measured mile was made in 11.83 seconds, or at the rate of 304.331 miles per hour. The trip southward was actually made in 12.08 seconds, or 298.013 miles per hour. The time for tlie measured mile had been given as 12.1 S seconds on that stretch.

Later Sir Malcolm Campbell announced that he was leaving immediately for Salt Lake City en route to New York, and would sail on September 12 for London.
