WOODVILLE

WOODVILLE, Sept. 4. Mrs N. M. Burnott presided at the monthly meeting of the Woodvillc Women’s Institute on Tuesday. The president spoke feelingly of the death of -Mrs S. McIntosh, who had been an active member, and also of the death of Mrs C. Walker, president of the Mangatainoka Women’s Institute, who previously had been a member of the local institute. Members stood in silence as a mark of sympathy to the relatives of these two ladies. Correspondence was received from the Borough Council and County Council inviting co-operation m the health stamp campaign, and it was decided to assist. Two new members were elected. Sympathy was expressed to Mrs St ace and Mrs Evans, who are in hospital. Congratulations were extended to the glee dull, under the conductorship of Mrs McCormack, for the very excellent concert held recently, which resulted in a substantial amount for the glee funds. A talk on gardening, dealing chiefly with the arrangement of miniature gardens, was given by Mrs Laseelles, of Palmerston North. A roll call, “Unpopular household duties and favourite occupations,” brought forth a variety of replies in accord with tho individual taste. The competition was for a decorated jar of spring flowers, this being won by Miss Beattie, Mrs Oliver being second and Mrs Jaine third. A second competition for a beaten brass article was won by Mrs Jaine, Miss Beattie being second. The bring and buy stall was well I laden with a variety of goods, everything I being disposed of. A “hard-up” danco in aid of tho Ota- I whao queen carnival candidate, held in the I Kumeroa Hall, was very well attended and 1 proved most enjoyable in every way. I Prizes won were us follow:—Best hard-up costume.- Ladies, Miss M. Ilarcourt; men, Mr J. Grant. Special for most original costume: Messrs K. Ncwland and .C. Mackie (cave man and cave woman). The winners of the euchre were Mrs W. Miller and Mr Zimmerman. Tho position of tho queens to date, with three weeks of the carnival to go, is as follows:—Hopelands, Miss Winnie Smith 3120, Kumeroa, Miss Doris Last 3106, Otawhao, Mrs W. Smyth 1809.

Woodville and Pahiatua Fire Brigades mot in the first of the two annual matches for the Tui-Kauri Cup, the result being in favour of Woodville by 14 points to 5. Pahiatua were the holders of tho cup, having had possession for the past two years. At the conclusion of tho match tho visiting team were hospitably entertained at the fire station by the membors of the local brigade. Mrs Woodham is the guest of Mrs O'. Baker. Mrs Kelly, Auckland, is the guest of Mrs M. Munro, Papatawa. Mr and Mrs J. Underwood and family late of Otaki, are visiting the district. Miss E. Tily, of tho Papatawa School, is spending the vacation with her parents in Palmerston North. Mrs 11. Staco sustained a painful injury on Monday, when she slipped and broke her left wrist. She had

put out her hand to save herself from falling but fell heavily on the floor. She was conveyed to tho Dannevirke Hospital to receive' medical attention.
