HEAVIER PENALTIES

FOR CONVERSION,OF CARS. WELLINGTON, Sept. 5. Legislative provision is to be made for a salutary punishment of motor car thieves. The Minister of Justice (Hon. J. G. Cobbe) said yesterday that he had instructed the law draftsman to prepare amendments to the Police Offences Act for submission to Parliament this season with a view to dealing adequately with an intolerable position. “I have promised that the law will bo amended and the penalty made very drastic,” the Minister added. “Cars are being stolen in all parts of the Dominion and the thieves often use them to convey other stolen property, and one of the troubles is that the owner of the stolen car is placed in a most awkward position when the number of his car is notified. I have had conversations with the Commissioner of Police and others, and the result will be the amendments for consideration this session.”
