WEST END SCHOOL

MEETING OF COMMITTEE. The West End School Committee met last evening, Mr G. Tremaine presiding. Others present were Messrs A. Penketh, A. AY. Just, A. McLean, J. Dalziell, A. Penfold, and AV. Collins. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs L l . Hogg, S. AV. Oliver, and H. AV. Jackson , (headmaster). Mr A. M. Stevenson, as secretary of the West End Swimming Club, wrote asking that permission be given the members of the club to lower the high diving board at the school baths by about four feet. The writer stated that the board would be more appreciated by the children if it were about ten feet from the water. The club also requested that the privileges granted last year should be renewed for the forthcoming season. —It was agreed that permission for lowering the top diving board should be given, provided the proposals were approved of by. Messrs McLean and Dalziell. The privileges of last year are to be renewed this year as requested. The headmaster reported that the roll number stood at 350, with an average attendance of 327.2 for the term. The health of the children had been good. Dr. Elizabeth Gunn, schools’ medical officer, had visited the school in the course of the month. The writer regretted to report the death, on August 19, of Norman Sapwell, a pupil in Standard 3 at the school. Two of the pupils of Standard 6, Harry Mouldev and Neil McLean, had this year been selected as' primary school Rugby representatives. Mr Dawkins had accompanied the team to Masterton. As far as the writer knew, it was the first occasion on which any of the pupils of the West End School had been selected to represent the city in that direction. The headmaster said he could not *peak too highly of the enthusiasm ot Messrs Dawkins and Douds, who had been giving very ernest attention to school football. For the third year in succession the AA'anganui Education Board’s environment certificate had been gained bv the school. It was agreed that a letter of sympathy should be sent to the parents of Norman Sapwell. On the motion of the chairman, it was agreed to send letters of congratulation to Masters Mouldey. and McLean and also to Master E. Edwards (who had been selected as a primary school soccer representative player). Letters of appreciation are to be sent to Messrs Dawkins and Douds. The chairman stated that the total cost of tlie school ball bad been just over £4l and the profit would be about £2O. Eulogistic comment was made bv several members to the tvoiß done by the ladies’ committee, Mr Penketh referring especially to tlieir expeditious work in the supper room. On the motion of Mr Penketh a vote of thanks was passed to Mr and Mrs AV. E. Schwabe for putting up the decorations in the ball ior the ball.
