Y.M.C.A.

BASKETBALL DINNER. The annual Y.M.C.A. basketball dinner was held last evening in Messrs Collinson and Cunninghame’s rooms, this being the most successful gather-* ing of its kind yet arranged by the Y.M.C.A. There was an attendance of 180, which filled the main entertainment room to overflowing. The gathering brought to a close the Y.M.C.A. inter-house basketball competitions and the gymnasium competitions. The chair was occupied bv Mr C. Woods, there being also present Messrs J. A. Grant (chairman of the Board of Directors), J. Selwyn (a member of the board), H. B. Free and Vaughan. The Ford Motors Cup, for interhouse basketball, was presented by Mr Selwyn to the captain of the C. M. Ross Company team, Miss R. Stephens, and each member of the team was given a bouquet. Mr A. D. Worboys (for the Hopwood Hardware Company) presented the Hopwood Hardware Shield, for the men’s inter-house basketball, to the City Council team, Air \V. Eyre being the captain. A cup for the knock-out competition, held at the close of. the women’s main basketball competition, was presented by Mr Grant to J. R. McKenzie’s team, and Mr Grant also presented the Y.M.C.A. Gymnasium Shield to Mr K. AV. Burne, as captain of the Scotland team. There were present as guests at the gathering a men’s basketball team and a women’s team from Wanganui Y.M.C.A., and after the dinner all repaired to the Y.M.C.A. building where games were played, between the local teams and the visitors, the home teams winning by a very convincing margin in each case. A social and dance was then entered upon, and supper was served l>efore the visitors departed ioi Wanganui. , / At the dinner Mr Selwyn led community singing and Miss B. Innes contributed an item.
