BASKETBALL
POSITION OF TEAMS. WELLINGTON, Aug. 31. When the New Zealand Basketball Association’s tournament was continued yesterday, the Southland team suffered two defeats, and left Wellington, the present holders of the New Zealand Cup, with an undisputed lead in the A grade. In the second grade, Southland Minor gained two points on Ashburton, who still lead the first section, and Wellington Minor sustained their first defeat, tying with South Canterbury in the second section. The score in points at the close of play yesterday afternoon was as follows : FIRST GRADE. Wellington 12. Southland 8, Canterbury 8, Auckland 7, Otago 7, Waikato 2, Hawke's Bay 2, Poverty Bay 0. SECOND GRADE. Section I. Ashburton 10 Southland Minor 9, Wairou 6. Manawatu 6, Marlborough 3, Bush 2, North Auckland 0. Section 11. Wellington Mmor 12, South Canterbury 12, Taranaki 10, Wairarapa 6, Rotorua 4. West Coast 4, Nelson 2, Wanganui 0. Additional results are: FIRST GRADE. Canterbury beat Hawke’s Bay, 15—10. Auckland boat Poverty Bay, 16 —C. Canterbury l>ent Waikato, 17 —12. Auckland drew with Otago, 13 —

South Canterbury beat Wanganui, 17 —7. South Canterbury beat Wellington Minor, 19 —9. NEARING THE END. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON. Aug. 31. The basketball tourney was resumed in excellent weather. Results: ' FIRST GRADE. Otago beat Povertv Bay, 24—4. Hawke’s Bav beat Waikato, 14 —11. SECOND GRADE. Section One. Final. —Southland Minor beat Ashburton, 15 —11. Other games resulted: Manawatu heat North Auckland, 20—15. Bush beat Marlborough, 21 —12. Section Two. Rotorua beat Nelson, 12 —7. This section was won yesterday by South Canterbury, who meet Southland Minor this afternoon for the President's Shield. The final between Southland Minor and Ashburton provided one of the fastest and cleanest games played in the tournament., Ashburton needed only to d raw to win -the section, but they lost their chances through careless passing, while their goal shooting was ; inaccurate. Southland Minor showed 'superiority in passing and shooting, and they‘were quicker and surer in their fielding.
