CAPTIVES IN CHINA.
HOPES FOR RELEASE DIM.
PEKIN, Aug. 30.
Latest reports from the region occupied by the Red bandits under the notorious Ho-lung, who are holding the New Zealand missionary, Mr Havnian, in Hunan, provide dim hopes ol an early release, ns the bandits are apparently flushed with the success ol their recent drive toward Changten, wlien they captured the cities of Shilimen and Tzeli. They are now demanding a greatlyincreased ransom over what they previously agreed to accept, the British Embassy reports.
A cable dated August 28 stated that the Pekin correspondent of the Times said that negotiations for the release of Messrs Hayman and Bosshardt, the missionaries held captive by bandits since October 9 last, had entered the final delicate stages. The ransom money, which the Communists greatly reduced, had been handed to couriers, and it was hoped that the missionaries would be released in a few days.
