DOMINION COAL

USE ON RAILWAYS. AUSTRALIAN ELIMINATED. (By Telegraph—Special to Standard.) WELLINGTON, Aug. 31. An important investigation connected with the use of New Zealand soft coals on the railways is to be undertaken by an inquiry board comprising Mr E. Casey (assistant-General Manager of Railways), Dr E. Marsden (secretary of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research), Mr G. T. Wilson (Superintendent of the Transport Division), and Mr J. Denz (a locomotive driver of long experience). Some years ago a large proportion of the coal used on the railways came from New South Wales, but the department steadily increased tlie proportion of New Zealand coal and now uses nothing else. This change has involved a number of problems, and it is to survey the results and to report on the possibilities of an extended use of New Zealand soit coals that an inquiry is being held.
