DANNEVIRKE

DANNEVIRKE, Aug. 30. The Dannevirke Power Board met this week, Mr M. O. Grainger presiding. Tho manager (Mr F. O. Devlin) in his report, gave the number of consumers to date as follow, tho figures for the corresponding month last year being in parentheses: Dannevirke borough, 1059 (1009), Dannevirke county, 917 (884); Woodville borough, 319 (312); Woodville county, 390 (380); totals, 2G85 (2585). It had been an exceptionally busy month, the number of new services and extensions far exceeding those for the same period oi the last five years. The following comparisons would give a fair indication of tho remarkable increase:—Total services erected from April 1-Atig ust 19: 1933, 35; 1934, 45; 1935, 64. A number of these services were of considerable length, requiring a fair number of poles. Three short lowtension extensions in Papatawa, Makotuku and Maharahara had been constructed and livened. Twenty-two new installations had been inspected and livened as well as 70 additions to existing installations, the additions in many enses being larger than the original installation.—The repojt was adopted. The death occurred at Wellington-to-day of Mr Willis Edward Combs, at the age of 90 years. The late Mr Combs had enjoyed fairly good health until a few months ago, when he went to Wellington to be with his two sons who reside there. Mr Combs had a very active career since ho came to New Zealand as a young man and saw service in the Maori War period. He was mainly engaged in storekeeping and for many years managed a store for the late Mr White, at I’orangahati, then going to Gisborne, where he resided for a number of years before coming back to Dannevirke. He married Miss Coles, of Onga Onga. who predeceased him some years ago. His eldest son, Willis, died in Wellington, some years ago. Mr Harry Combs, another son, is proprietor of the Civic Press, and Mr Frank Combs, a son. is headmaster of the Miramar School. Mr Combs had many friends in Hawke’s Bay. his kindly disposition making him a favourite with all who knew him. He was one of the oldest members of the Loyal Napier Lodge, M.U., 1.0.0. F.

The following team has been selected to represent the Dannevirke Hockey Association in a challenge match for the Nordon Cup, now held by Hastings, next Thursday:—Goalkeeper, K. Chapman; full-backs, A. Bennett and F, Thompson; halves, S. Philip, A. O’Brien, W. Bassett; forwards, N. Robinson, J. Merrylees. J. Smith, G. Robinson, E. Thompson. Reserves. B. Mabbett (forward) and G. Grant (back). Miss C. G. Mahony, of Dannevirke, is visiting Hastings. Mrs C. Weenink, of Otaki, is spending a holiday with Mr and Mrs J. L. Vigors. Mrs H. H. Jeffreys, formerly of Dannevirke, who has been spending a holidav in this district, returned to Pukekolie to-day. Mr T. D. Scott, of the Dannevirke High School staff, left today for Wellington, on his way to Timaru, where he will spend the remainder of the school vacation.
