FAMILY ALLOWANCES.

PROVISION FOR DESERTED WIVES. Provision for women to apply direct for family allowances is contained in the Family Allowances Amendment Bill, notice of which was given by Mr Barnard. Mr Barnard explained in an interview that a number of deserted wives with little children were unable to draw family allowances because of a technical provision in the existing legislation that the husband must apply. His Bill was designed to do away with that difficulty and to allow women to apply direct.
