EXTRACTS FROM “ STANDARD.” AUGUST 31, 1905.
A paragraph stated: —The platforms of all the carriages on the Government railways are to be fitted with gates, similar to those with which the platforms of tho imported Americans ears arc fitted. As a further protection, railing is to be put in to prevent people falling between the platforms. By this means tho platforms will be made much safer than at present. Tho relaying of tho railway track over the Uimutaka hill was being carried out. Falkner, tho Australian champion walker, had arrived in New Zealand to compete with Kerr, the New Zealand champion. Tho Wanganui Freezing Company’s works were to be extended to handle 20,000 sheep a day. A dividend of 8 per cent, was to be paid for tho previous year. Tho secretary of the New Zealand Farmers’ Dairy Union was removing his office to Palmerston North from Wellington. Tho Levin Dairy Company’s output in tho previous year had been 271 ions of butter, a rise of 27 tons on tho previous scaAmazoment had been expressed in St. Petersburg when it was known that & peace treaty had been arranged with Japan.
