SOUTH-WEST GALE
CENTRAL HAWKE’S BAY. TRAIL OF DAMAGE. Per Press Association. WAIPUKUIIAU, Aug. 29. A south-westerly gale in Central Hawke’s Bay of exceptional severity, rivall.y that of Saturday last, developed with increasing velocity yesterday. There were interruptions intermittently this morning of the electric, supply and wireless masts, trees, fences, and sheds, also pastures, suffered. A local private garage was completly demolished and the car damaged. The roof of a Takapau outbuilding was carried bodily five chains across the road and fell on the telephone lino interfering with communications for a time as far south as Palmerston North. An uprooted tree damaged a line at Porangaliau near Arlington station and also temporarily impeded traffic. Cars were held up for a time at Takapau. The wind had not abated this evening.
