NEW ZEALANDERS IN SYDNEY SOUTHERNERS AT WANGANUI.

(By “Binocular.”)

The Tractor gelding Jaunt is being schooled over fences in the. south and is stated to he shaping promisingly.

W. Hancock, who has been head lad for C. Giosler during the past six years, will take over the latter's horses for the spring meetings.

Australian reports show that Princess Doreen and Tauramai have been backed substantially in the Epsom-Metropolitan doubles in Sydney. There is an unnamed Tractor—Commentary gelding included in the nominations for the Otago Hunt Club. The cognomen Synopsis might be suggested for him.

Sir Charles Clifford has a team of five horses engaged at Wanganui, inclusive of the Guineas candidates Bun Eight and Hororata. Their presence will lend interest to the event.

Headmistress is reported to have benefited immensely as the result of her long spell in the spring and to have developed into a solid maro. The daughter of Chief Ruler should win some good races this term.

At the Koatarmi Stud Anklet (Absurd — Bronze) has foaled a bay colt to Limond, and Watenvings (Absurd —Sea Elf) a bay filly to Posterity. The filly is a half-sister to Agrion, Chile, Waikare, and White Wings.

Rebel Song has rejoined the Chokeborc Bodge stables in the hopo that he will stand another preparation. It is a strange freak of nature that good horses arc subject to ailments, while the duffers escape. Bonny Glow, by Lord Warden from Bright Glow, was an over-grown two-year-old, but she is stated to have done well during the winter and to be now showmore pace on the tracks. She may prove up to classic requirements in the autumn. Studlcy Royal, the Paper .Alone) —Red Queen two-year-old gelding in E. Holmes’s stable at lliccarton, is stated to be the only one of his age to have galloped further than three furlongs to date. With two companions lie recently ran half a mile in 51sec.

Tia Rosetta, a mare engaged in the Hunters' Hurdles, to be run at the Otago Hunt Club’s meeting, is a half-sister by Tractor to Silver Coat, who was a winner last' season amongst the two-year-olds. Tia Rosetta made her first and only appearance up to date when running as a two-year-old in 1928. She was then turned out and practically forgotten, and later offered as a gift without being accepted.

Among the nominations for the Otago Hunt Club's meeting is a gelding by Roscnor or Day Comet from Belle of New York. Belie of New York was also the dam of Scamp and Thurnbcll, who were both unlucky to miss distinction over jumps. Scamp broke his back at the big r,od wall at \\ ingatui. There should be no difficulty in finding a name for any pro. duced by the Belle of New York, a particularly successful musical comedy. Heather Glow did some schooling at Riccarton before the Grand National meeting, but though he showed promise as a jumper he was not considered sufficiently advanced in his preparation to be produced. He will be kept in work and will have a race on the Hat, probably at Rangiora, on Labour Day, as a preliminary to competing in the brush hurdle events at the New Zealand Cup meeting. Silver Brier, winner of the Auckland Handicap at the Pakuranga Hunt Club meeting, was bred in 'Canterbury by Mr G. Gerard, and was formerly trained at Riccarton by E. Scoullar. She is a five-year, old by Silverado from Paper Rose and Saturday’s was her second success for her present trainer, C. Moran, who is well known in the light-harness world as the ownertrainer of the champion pacer, Impromptu. An addition to M. Conway’s team at Hawcra is Sylvanus, a four-year-old chestnut mare by Nigger Minstrel from that useful performer Airway, by Tree Lucerne from Elying Wind, by Musketry from Poitaniwha, by Vanguard. Sylvanus was in work as a two-year-old and showed promise in her iraming efforts, but contiacted a severe cold and was turned out before racing. During her spell she has thickened out considerably and is now a fine robust type, very much resembling her dam. Negotiations were opened last week (says a Sydney writer) for the purchase of the New Zealand three-year-old Gay Sheik. New Zealand advisers declared him the most likely stayer ot the Dominion youngsters, and intending buyers were prepared to pay heavily for him. '1 ho price asked was even higher, however, and negotiations have not advanced further. They have not been dropped, and some further move may be made later. The former Riccarton-traincd gelding Shatter won his first rare for his new owner when ho scored in the Hurdle Race Handicap at the William-town meeting in Melbourne on Saturday. Shatter left Riccarton last spring with members of F. D. Jones’s team, and was disposed of on bclialt of Mr El. A. Knight at the conclusion of the A.J.G. spring meeting, where he was a winner. He was bought with the purpose of developing him into a hurdler, a department at which he quickly showed premise; but last Saturday’s win was his first over the battens.

An interesting nomination for tlie Otago Hunt Club's annual rate meeting lias been made for Money Mine, wjio lias been off the scone for sonic time, He lias latterly figured in the hunting field and apparently his usefulness on a racecourse is not yet over. Money Mine made his last appearance on a racecourse during the season of 2931-32, when he started in eight races and scored one placed performance. Money Mine was foaled in 1924, and lienee is not yet beyond the age of success on the racecourse. Hu was a useful handicap horse in his day and won several races when trained by C. Gieselcr, who now intends devoting attention to starting horses instead of training them to finish. Gascellu was going well when ho came to grief at the top of the hill the last time in the Grecnmount Steeplechase at Ellcrslie on Saturday, lie was in charge at the time, after lying about third early, lie was again brought out for the Hunt Cup, and, taking charge at the seven-furlong post the first time, led till reaching the top of the hill the last time, where lie made a faulty jump and dropped back. Gascellc lias not bad much racing experience, but, being a young horse, lie should do much better Inter on. Kiltowyn was responsible for a sterling performance in finishing third to Engi and Knight of Australia in the Jcllieoe Handicap last Saturday. Ho was conceding upwards of a stone and a half to both of them, and, furthermore, lie was racing in ground that was not entirely to his liking. As Kiltowyn is not thoroughly seasoned, the run is sure to benefit him considerably and ho will improve with each workout from now onward. All going well this horse will make his next appeaarncc at the Avondale meeting in September. Square Acre was a good horse a couple of seasons ago when trained by L. Knapp at Awapuni, and among other races ho won was the Crofton Handicap, six furlongs, at Trent ham, from a good field, including Maine, Gladium, Hunting Jay, King Thomond, and Horowhonua, and the Milson Handicap, six furlongs, at Awapiini, those behind him including Wasteland, Land Tax, King Thomond, Amyril and others. Ho did not do much racing last season and at present is trained by Lis owner, Mr A. Coitbrongh, of Cambridge. He was produced in the Sylvia Park Handicap at Ellorslic on Saturday ami was never in the picture, and after the good track work he was reported to have been doing at Cambridge his display was rather disappointing. However, Square Acre may do better during the spring. Two well-related rising two-year-olds that are tinder the care of F. Davis at Woodville arc Missal and Caste. Missal, a chestnut filly liy Limond from the English marc Mirahelle 11, is a full-sister lo 1 hco, winner of both Derbies in Australia this season. She is a small, neat filly, and although not very forward at present looks as if she will gallop fast when asked to sprint. Caste is a brown filly by the latest succesfiil Koatanui sire Posterity. Iter dam being Cowl who left good performers in Rational, Mask, and The Masquerader. She is a good-looking, well developed youngster who, however, may lie given a little time before being seriously tested.

NAPIER, Aug. 28. Attributed to a falling off in the totalisator and other rovonuo combined with a lack of public support, a loss of ±1314 17s lid is shown in the annual report of the president, of (he Napier Park Racing Club (Mr Cecil Louisson), who proposes the appointment of a special eoinmitteo to arouse greater interest in the club’s welfare. NEW ZEALAND TRAINER SMART TEAM IN SYDNEY.

' The former New Zealand driver. E. N. Kemicriov, has a small hut smart team in his care at Ascot, where he has quarters, and has taken over the Tasmanian homes, Sucvic, Emilias Way, and Evicus, says a Sydney paper. Sucvic is a little uncertain at the barrier, and when well hacked for his division of the Approved Handicap at Harold Park recently, lost his chance of winning through being slow to move off. Einilius Way, who had won at Ins two previous starts, was backed in the l'lynig Handicap, hut the consistent Pay Huon ran 2min 14 l-Ssec from scratch, and that was far too for the* back-markers, including Emilius Way. . , Undaunted, however,’ the stable invested heavily on Evicus ill Ihe Harold I aik Jlandicap, and the mare recorded a comfortable win. She followed King Auto for the greater part of the journey, but, with two furlongs remaining, was taken to the front, and she ran home a comfortable winner from Electric Boy and Radio Ribbons. Evicus was handicapped to run the two miles ill 4min 39.-ec, and she did it m 4min 30 2-ssec, so that Electric Boy, who started from 60 yards behind, and was beaten by 12 yards, ran within a second ot so of the course record of 4mi:i 24soc put up by Sheik some years ago.
