COLLAPSE OF HORSE.

LADY ARIKI TOA DIES ON TRACK. NEW PLYMOUTH. Aug. 27. Collapsing on pulling up after a gallop up the straight on the New Plymouth racecourse, to-day, the Warplane marc Lady Ariki Toa staggered and reared backwards on to the four by four railing around the course proper, which smashed beneath the impact. Her rider, the Marton trainer 1,. G. Morris, had it lucky escape from serious injury, and by- throwing himself clear) got off with little worse than a bad shaking. Lady Ariki Toa attempted to regain her feet, but fell again, and died within a few minutes. Lady Ariki Toa. who claimed engagements in two amateur riders’ races at New Plymouth this week, was an eight-year-old marc by Warplane from a Maniapoto marc. She was owned by Mr H. A. Glasgow, an enthusiastic member of the Rangitikci Hunt Club, who resides at Tttrakina.

Lady Ariki Toa did not. begin racing until last month, when she contested the Ladies’ Bracelet at Marton and justified the confidence of her supporters bv winning very easily from Gainsay, who succeeded at I’akuranga last Saturday. Lady Ariki Toa went on to the Manawatu meeting and ran Santoft to a length in the Ladies’ Bracelet there. These were her only start*, and her New Plymouth prospects looked bright.
