GLEN OROUA.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) GLEN ORUUA, Aug. 24. The ladies’ B grade basketball competition for the Davison Cup concluded last Monday attcriioon when the Glen Uroua team, playing on the home ground, defeated ivopane by 13 goajs to 3. Mrs I. R. Hammers refereed, 'the Glen Uroua team proved to be the _ winners of the competition by one point, and deservo credit for the keenness displayed, as only in tfio latter part ot the season did the players have the services ot a coach. Arbor Day was observed at the scnool on Wednesday, special lessons being given in the morning, wmle during the alterlioon the senior pupils, under the direction of members ot the School Committee and the head teacher, plained 27- trees. The trees planted three years ago, about sixty in number, have done particularly well, and these were given the usual attention, grass boilig removed and the ground being dug round each. Committee members also busied thcmsolvos in cariying out repairs to fences. The fortnightly euchro party and danco of the Soeiat Club was held in the hall on Thursday night, when there was the usual good attendance. The ladies’ euchre prizes were won by Mrs W. bexton and Mrs R. Boswell, while die moil’s awards went to Mr W. T. Sadd and Mr T. Kane. A Monte Cailo waltz was won by iVliss N. Wheeler and partner. Mr L. H. lhle was M.C. for the dance. Mr E. li. Lange, chief agricultural instructor to die Wanganui Education Board, was a visitor to the school on Thursday, when an inspection of the work of the senior pupils was made. Mr Lange also took the opportunity of presenting Charlie Webb, the lirst prize winner in tills year’s mangold growing competition, with a book. The school closed yesterday afternoon lor the second term vacation. Miss E. M. Harris, assistant teacher, Left later for her home in Wanganui. A crowd of over eighty was present at the school basketball ground this afternoon, the occasion being a basketball afternoon given by the members of the ladies’ team m honour of tlio members of the Glcti Uroua School Committee and other friends of the players. A strong wind made conditions somewhat unpleasant, but this was not allowed to interfere with the programme arranged. A mixed tournament was conducted, six teams taking part and some closely contested games woro seen. The winning team proved <o be Miss M. Rrebble’s, and consisted of the following players:—Mcsdamcs W. Davison and A. Milne, Misses M Brebblc, M. Altrce M. Beattie, Messrs R. Prcbble, J. McMillan, A. Gibbs and F. Lawlor. at the conclusion of the tournament, die president of the club (Mrs C. G. Beattie) presented the captain of tho winning team with a “cup” fashioned from an ancient kerosene lamp, and the members with squeakers, and toy balloons Ihe duties of refereeing were^ carried out by Mis I. R Saunders and Mr S. G. 1 ailanc. Af ternoon tea was served to everybody present by the lady players and their friends, Mr W C. Scott expressing thanks to those responsible for the organisation of such a successful function. Mrs C. G. 81 - at *;' o responded, and in the course of her remarks stated that tho club was deeply appreciative of the kindness of the School Committoo and olhers who bad assisted the Hub. The afternoon was brought to a conclusion with a basketball match between the ladies’ team, the winners of the Je Kawau B grade competition, and the school girls’ team, the winners of the lc Kawau Schools competition. The school team was minus several of its regular players, but put up a good showing although beaten by 5 goals to 3. Mr S. G. Barlano refereed.
