DEMOCRAT PARTY.
CONFERENCE IN SESSION. NO STATEMENT ISSUED. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, Aug. 22. Morning, afternoon, and evening motcings acre licld to-day by candidates and prospective candidates of the Democrat Party at present in conference in Wellington. At the tea adjournment it was hoped to finish the conference to-night, but as the evening advanced it was realised that it would be necessary to resume to-morrow morning. The indications now are that the conference will not conclude until tomorrow afternoon. No announcement
was made for publication when the | j conference adjourned to-niglit, but it c is possible that an official statement i will be issued at the conclusion of the s proceedings. Chief interest attaches to the lead- < ership of the party. 'The names men- i tinned in this connection include the Mayor of Wellington (Mr T. C. A. Hislop), who is presiding over the conference; Dr G. J. Adams, of Wan- | ganui, deputy-chairman of the conference; and Mr J. 15. Donald, of Auckland. Mr Donald returned to Auckland to-night, due to the illness of his wife. I The fact that Sir Alexander Herdi man was not present to-day appears Ito rule him out as a possible leader, j All to-day the sub-committees ap--1 pointed by the conference on the pre--1 vious day were working on questions . lof detail relating to the policy with , 1 which the Democrat Party proposes to
go to the country, and to-night its delegates sat as a general conference to discuss their reports. This discussion will be continued to-morrow. The proceedings wore attended by ofi three more than the number present on the opening day.
