INTER-SCHOOL FOOTBALL.
FEILDING BEAT SCOTS‘COLLEGE. Falling far short of the usual standard of high school football, the annual match between the first fifteens of the Feilding Agricultural High School and Scots College took place at Johnston Park yesterday afternoon, and resulted in a win for the home school by 14 points to 5. With individual exceptions, notably on the Feilding side, not one of the inner hacks was capable of penetrating, hut the decided slowness of the Scots College backs was particularly obvious. The forwards were well matched, and there was hardly the points difference in the teams that tho score indicated. The following were the teams: Scots College.—Cnlley, Robertson, Sygrove, Potiki. Blyth, Hill, King, Wall, Turner, Tatemnn. Tubert, Mc T Connell. Collins, Crystall, Brown. Feilding.—White, Kenevan, Barlow, Crump, Gollan, Thurston, Haywood, Kempthorne, Strawbridge, Hills, Jeffs, Hollard, Mclntyre, Watson, Williams. Feilding kicked off into a high wind and after a preliminary skirmish, Hollard led a rush which was becoming dangerous when Blyth neatly took the leather from the rover’s toes to break the attack up. McConnell led the way back, but the whites could not get past the home twenty-five. Here a line-out took place, Crump getting possession to make a sharp run hack to half-way. Thurston blocked an attempt by the visitors to break away again. School keeping the ball tight and play on the whites’ twenty-
five line. From here While made a good but vain attempt to score penaltj points. Scots gradually worked back, Potiki and Blyth heading the final assault on the .School line. Potiki got very near, but his transfer to his supporter went astray and a forward melee ensued on the line, School forcing. From the kick-in Crump and Kenevan rushed up to find Culley unprepared and but for a fumbled ball a clear breakaway would have resulted. Scots saved and again play moved to the Feilding twenty-five. A good passing bout by. whites 6aw Sygrove sent off with a good chance, but Kenevan had the heels of him and grassed him, white lining out. The blue forwards got to work from the line-out and, well supported by the rearguard, gained ground rapidly. The ball worked along the back line to Crump, who dashed away with Kenevan in company, the two of them passing and reverse passing right through the white rearguard for Crump to complete. White’s kick failed. Robertson showed plenty of dash in a run down the line in the ensuing play, being forced out as he was getting near. Scots continued to press, but an infringement held them up. Half-time found the score unaltered. The second spell started with a rush by the whites which ended in School forcing. The home forwards put their weight into a counter, and meeting a scattered defence reached within striking distance. Here Kenevan got possession and, throwing off two high tackles, screwed and twisted his way through for a good try. White’s kick went over the post. Sygrove and Blyth figured prominently in two sparkling assaults launched by Scots, | but again they failed to sustain the effort and School returned. Connell intercepted a blue passing rush and was well away towards the distant goal when Kenevan overhauled him. Play shifted across to midfield, where had handling by. Scots from a scrum let the blues through, Kenevan picking up. Getting into his stride, the fast winger fell to Crystall, hut Thurston and Crump carried on for the latter to cross. White again failed. In tackling Keneven, tho white fullback, Crystall was hurt, Hyde replacing him. In the succeeding play Crump made a dashing run from halfway right through tho white team, but, in trying to come round under the bar, lost Iris try when about four of the opposition tackled him. Infusing some vim into their work, the whites rolled School back on„their last line, a piece of hard work resulting in a melee on the line from which Tubert scored. Turner converted from wide out. Following a sories of halts for injuries, Scots got away again, hut, as before, slowness in the rearguard let the forwards down. A relieving kick from the blue rearguard came out to the open and, dashing up, Crump caught Culley out of place and, booting well downfield, set out with a clear run before him. Sygrove came up fast in pursuit and in a thrilling race Crump just beat the white winger to tne force. White converted and the game ended : Feilding High School 14, Scots College 5. Mr Holman refereed.
