PERSONAL.

Mr F. W. Johnston, who has been president of the South Island Motor Union for five years, has announced his retirement.

Mr J. A. Nash, M.P., has been elected an ex-officio member of the executive committee of the Palmerston North 50,000 G’lub. Mr S. I. McKenzie, secretary of the Manawatu Automobile Association, and Mr W. H. Brown, a member of the association, will be delegates to tho annual conference, opening in New Plymouth to-morrow, of the North Island Motor Union.

Prior to his relinquishing duty at Woodville, the stationmaster (Mr E. A. Smart) was met by the staff of the Woodville railway station and presented with a fountain pen. Mr Smart, who has retired after 36J years’ service, has taken up his residence in Palmerston North. Mr N. P. Nielsen, of Tiakitahuna, was, at to-day’s meeting of the New Zealand Pig Breeders’ Council, made a life member of the association in recognition of his past services. In moving the motion, Mr W. P. Bickers stated that Mr Nielsen had devoted years to the work, his aim always having been for tho improvement of the standard of the animal.

At the annual meeting of the shareholders of the Rongotea Dairy Company, yesterday, a motion of condolence was passed with the relatives of the late Messrs J. Will, G. H. Davidson and J. Parker, who had passed away in the course of the year. Messrs Will and Davidson had occupied the jjosition of chairman of directors, and Mr Parker had been a supplier.

Among those present at the Arbor Day observance at the Hokowhitu School yesterday was Mr L. J. Plank (headmaster), who recently returned from Wellington after undergoing an operation to his throat, and the chairman of the School Committee, Mr P. V. Burns, extended a special welcome to him. Mr Plank’s friends will be pleased to know that he is maintaining good progress.
