A FLOOD MENACE.

It is not a new thing for parts of Palmerston North to become flooded when an excessively heavy rainfall occurs. The trouble again became pronounced with the steady downpour during several days of last week, and a number of residents were subjected to a most disagreeable aud, to their health, dangerous plight. According to the discussion at the City Council table, the flooding can be traced to the Kawau Stream rising above the level of its banks and also backing up numerous small drains that run into it. But no matter the cause, it is the Council’s duty to provide a remedy, and the people whose gardens have been covered by water, whose homes have been surrounded, and whose health has been placed in jeopardy, will be pleased to learn that the Council is taking action to avoid a repetition of scenes the Mayor and councillors witnessed at the week-end. The Takaro Progressive Association also brought to the Council’s notice the severe flooding that occurs in that suburb when the Kawau Stream Tiscs above the level of its banks, and has submitted a number ot requests that are worthy ot expert investigation so that a remedy will be found for a situation which is, as the Mayor said, a disgrace to the city. Flooding in times of exceptionally heavy rainfall cannot be wholly guarded against, but much can be done to alleviate the plight of residents now affected by the sudden overflowing of the Kawau Stream.
