A tunnel collapsed near Brandenburg Gate, behind the Hindenburg Palace, while it was being constructed for an extension of the underground railway. It is feared that twenty aro buried.
Firemen and police are working feverishly to effect a rescue through the mass of tangled girders and timber. It is feared that fourteen are dead. Sappers, firemen, and Nazi squads aro still endeavouring the penetrate the debris.
A skilful tram-driver prevented a greater disaster. He saw the road cave in immediately ahead and reversed the tram. As the abyss widened trees and tramway standards slid into the opening, but the tram got clear in time.
