EXTRACTS FROM “ STANDARD.” AUGUST 3, 1905.

The Kairanga County Council had received advice that a portion of Cliff Road had vanished into the Manawatu River. The slip had occurred at a lienj in the road opposite the polo grounds where general erosion had been evident. High prices had boon obtained for cows at a clearing sale near Palmerston North, the herd of 91 averaging £7 12s 6d. The top price was £l2 ss. A property of 95 acres known as Chiselhurst Park at Fitzherhert had changed hands at a very satisfactory figure to tinseller, and was being cut into sections ranging from two to six acres. A Police Commission had been inquiring for some time into allegations made against the general conduct of the force following the imprisonment of one of its members at Dunedin for theft. The end of the inquiry had been reached, although tlie finding was not to ho announced until later. A Royal Commission on food supplies for England in time of war had given a reassuring re;>ort. It was recommended that experiments should bo conducted into the storage of grain. The Manawatu touring Rugby team had played a drawn game with Southland at Invercargill. . As an example of conditions in tlie Russian armv a message from St. Petersburg said a general had shot dead a corporal who could not, name those who shouted “scoundrel” when the general said ho could not go to tho front with them. The soldiers literally tore itlic general' to pieces.
