| MANAWATU ASSOCIATION. j The report and balance-sheet of the I Manawatu Lawn Tennis Association for the year ended June 30 fast states : : “Twenty clubs affiliated, with a total |of 1134 active members, this being ' an increase on last season of two clubs and 106 active members. In the northern section the Saturday A grade competition was | won by Palmerston North, while Levin again won in the southern section. In the play-off of the intersection final Palmerston North were the winners. The Saturday 11 grade was again divided into two sections. The winners of the respective sections were Takaro A and Manawatu. •In the play-off Takaro A won the B grade championship. In addition to the A and B grades, a C grade competition was established, and was won by Linton. The Wednesday competition was played in one grade and won by Palmerston North A. The entries in all grades were very satisfactcyy and showed a decided increase on previous years. The general standard of play throughout the affiliated clubs has shown a marked improvement with the continuation ol the inter-club competitions. The ladies match was not played • “Three representative matches were plaved, the results being as follow: — v. 'Hutt Valley, at Miramar, lost 1410; v. Wairarapa, at Carterton, won 13-11; v. Wanganui, at Palmerston North, won 18-6. Unfortunately our challenge for the Christie Cup, held by Hawke’s Bay, after being twice postponed owing to bad weather, had to be abandoned. The association s open tournament was again held in conjunction with the Palmerston North Club’s annual tournament, the winners of the various events being as follow: Men’s championship singles. 1). C. Coombe; women’s championship singles, Miss D. Nicliolls ; men’s championship doubles, Lamne and Cox ; women’s championship doubles, Misses Nicliolls and Howe; mixed championship doubles, Charters and Miss Nicliolls. The association’s residential championships were held on the 19th and 22nd January on the courts of the Palmerston North Club, the following being the winnners:—Men’s championship singles, Dr Chisholm ; men’s championship doubles, Boddy and Swainson ; men’s handicap singles, R. Bennett Challenge Cup was won by the Palmerston North Bo,\s High School team, and the limes and Oakley Cup by the Levin High School team. , “The association notes with pleasure the various successes of the Hooper Brothers, both in singles and doubles Wyndham won the North Island and Hawke’s Bay junior championships, while Stafford annexed the Wellington and Otago junior titles. A junior championship turnament was held on March 23, G. Tapp being the winning boy, and Miss Pat Lower the winning girl. “The following ranking lists have been compiled : “Men.—T). I. Robertson 1, Chisholm 2, Boddy and Salmond, equal, 3, Beatson 5, Graham and O’Brien, equal, 6, Swaiuson 8, Beckett and Goodwin, equal, 9. “Women. Mrs Thomson I, Mrs Anderson 2, Miss Black and Mrs Waldin, equal, 3, Misses N. Astlc and Graham, equal, 5, Mrs Beattie and Miss Cnrty, equal, 7, Misses B. Swaiuson and C. Wilson, equal, 9. “In several cases it has been necessary to bracket two players owing to fact that they have met neither each other nor the same opponents, so that there is no real line as to their respective merits. “The financial position of the association shows a welcome improvement over that of last year. This is mainly due to the following causes:— (l) In-I crease of £6 19s 6d in revenue from affiliation fees; (2) profit on local 1
tournament; (3) decrease in entertainment expenses; (4) cuitailment in general expenses wherever possible. Last year closed with a credit balance of £4 7s 5d as against £l7 9s 5d this year Thanks are due to the Palmerston North Club, Manawatu Club, and Girls’ High School for the use of thencourts for tournaments; to Mr R. H. Spencer, our lion, auditor; to the ladies who assisted with the refreshments at tournaments; to tho Press for their valuable services, and to all who voluntarily gave their services to the benefit of our tennis.
