GLEN OROUA.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) GLEN OROUA, Aug. 2. So far as llte local school is concerned, 'the final match of the To Kawau Primary Schools Basketball Association’s competition for the Ivostcr Rose Bowl was played at Glon Oroua, when the Glen Oroua girls defeated Taikorea by 12 goals to two. The match was played at a fast pace throughout, and, though the Taikorea girls appeared to have the better of the play m the second spell, they could make little impression on the solid defence of the homo team, who, with tho winning of the rose bowl, accomplished in their previous match, did not unduly exert themselves. Miss IS. M. Harris (Glen Oroua) refereed. The visitors were' entertained at afternoon tea following the game. The success of file girls was in a largo measure due to the very eflicient coaching of Mrs T. R. Saunders, formerly assistant teacher at tho school, and also to tho energetic members of the school committco who were responsible for the laying down of a concrete basketball court which coukl be used in all kinds of weather. Tho team, during this season, played 14 matches, winning them all, tho goals scored totalling 253, whilo 51 were scored against them. In addition, tlio team, had tho honour of winning at the Sandon Jubilee celebrations tho jubilee rose bowl, accomplishing this without defeat. Tho following are tho names of the .players who took part in the matches during tho season : Margaret Poupard, J cancttc Scott, lna Parlano (forwards) ; Mary Alfree, Joyce Farmer, Nola Webb, Marjorie Farland, Ethclwyn Farland (centres); Thelma Sadd, Pearl Gray, Myra Scott and Valerie Scott (defenders). In the primary schools Rugby trials to select the Te Kawau representatives, players included from the local school were Pat Sullivan, Charlie Webb and Frank Lawlor. Tho two formers woro selected in the representative team, and in the match against Palmerston North Schools last Saturday C. Webb was successful in scoring a try, while P. Sullivan was successful in converting a try. Mrs W. A. Boswell has been on a visit to Auckland to attend the conference of stitutes. Mrs 11. O’Connor is at present tho Dominion Federation of Women’s Inon a visit to Masterton. .Mr and Mrs F. 11. Richards and family formerly of Ekctainina, have taken up their residence hero, while Mr and Mrs J. 11. Mason have left the district to reside at Longburn. The following are the weather observations supplied by the local school for the month of July: Average barometric pressure, 29.58 inches; average temperature, 46.09 degrees; total rainfall, 2.42 inches; prevailing wind, easterly; number of frosts, 6. All tho readings were taken at 9 a.m. daily. A ladies’ basketball match, to have been played at Glen Oroua on Wednesday between Glen Oroua and Taikorea, was postponed until next week on account of illness among the players of the latter team.
