DRIVERS BLINDED.
SENSATIONAL SMASH. * NEW PLYMOUTH July 30. With their drivers blinded bv vivid lightning from a fierce electrical storm raging over New Plymouth; two cars staged a spectacular crash at the foot of Oakura Hill. The right front wheels of the cars met and the car driven by Mr W. H. Cochrane turned about, plunging over a steep 20-foot bank and coming to rest suspended over a further drop by the slender support of a wire fence, of which the posts were uprooted. The other car, driven by Mr Iv. Roebuck, skidded broadside and then somersaulted, stopping against a telegraph pole. The hood was completely wrecked, but egress was gained through a door which sprung open during the somersault.
Of the eight persons involved none suffered more than slight abrasions and shock.
