DESTITUTE FAMILIES.

A SHANNON OBJECTION. (From Our Own Correspondent.) SHANNON, July 31. At the fortnightly meeting of the Borough Council, on Tuesday evening, a petition signed by business people was received. entering a strong protest agninst the policy of the Palmerston North Hospital Board in sending families in receipt of charitable aid from other centres and locating them in Shannon. This practice, if indulged in to any extent, must detract from the good name of the town, it was stated. The fact, which will doubtless be reported to the Hospital Board’s meetings, that a certain number of families are in receipt of charitable aid in Shannon must react to the detriment of the town and possibly be the means of keeping more desirable citizens away. The petition asked the council to take the matter up with the Hospital Bourd and endeavour to have the migration of these families to the town stopped. Tlie council supported the petition.
