NEW SCENIC ROAD
QUESTION OF RESPONSIBILITY. Per Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, July 18. Members of the general council of the Automobile Association to-night protested strongly against the Main Highways Board being compelled to take over the unformed scenic road in Eglinton Valley to reach Milford Sound. “I think this is one of the most serious things motorists have ever had to face,” said the chairman (Wr W. R. Carey). “This road is a national one and "not a motorists’ one, yet it has been put on to the Highways Board by any authority which says: ‘You have got to take it over.’ ” “It is the same old story,” said Mr F. W. Freeman. “The Government is going to see that the motorist pays.” Efforts had been made, said Mr Carey, to put the cost of the past construction on to the board, but they had been resisted. The board were willing to take over the 47 miles already formed, hut because of the action of “this authority” the unformed portion Had been declared a highway. It was agreed that motorists ought to protest strongly, and that tho first step should he to have the matter discussed by the North and South Island Motor Unions.
