AMATEUR BOXING

A SPLENDID TOURNAMENT. DOWNES BEATS WILSON. A large attendance greeted the amateur boxing exponents at a tournament at Havill's gymnasium last night, when the fare met with the lull approval of the spectators, several of the bouts reaching such heights that enthusiasm ran high. The chief bout was that between Wilson (9.8) and B. Downes (10.4), two Marion representatives, which was over six rounds. Wilson started very confidently and he kept his opponent guessing with a brilliant twohanded attack. Downes, however, pinned his faith to a straight left, until well on in the second round when he begun to open out with his right. Both were showing colour before the round ended. Wilson connected with ..ome solid rights in the third session, which proved to be a very strenuous one for both men. In the fifth Wilson escaped trouble which was threatening to almost turn the tables, and they exchanged blows with freedom until they were exhausted. Downes recovered during the interval to return to the attack and he dropped Wilson for nine. However, the latter came back fighting and connected nicely with right crosses as the round closed. Downes was declared the winner on points, but the trophy for the most plucky loser went to Wilson. A special midget boat between N. Hastings (4.3 J), of Palmerston North, and J. Orange (5.0), of Dannevirke, opened the ball. A draw was a popular decision after a keenly fought exposition. Although his opponent held an advantage of 81b in the weights. G. Hastings (Palmerston North) proved himself to be the faster fighter when in opposition to A. Fowler (Eeilding), and he took the decision.

Two middleweights, R. Bevan (Marton) and J. Johnston (Palnierston North), did not take any liberties with one another, both packing a solid punch. The local lad took a points decision by a narrow margin. The hard-hitting R. Ward (Palmerston North) displayed a superiority over J. Hays (Shannon) and at the end of the second round the referee called the bout off, the visitor having been a veritable target for his opponent. D. Karaitiana (Dannevirke), with his weight advantage, kept T. Lavin (Palmerston North) very busy in the first round, the visitor boring in all the time. However, Lavin kept his opponent off in the second stanza and outfought him in the final round. It was a stirring, bout. Although J. O’Neill (Palmerston North) outboxed P. Lissette (Dannevirke) in the early part of their bout, he ran into heavy weather in the closing stages of the second round, being sent to the mat with a blow to the head. The visitor repeated the dose in the final round and although O’Neill regained his feet at the call of eight, Lissette dropped him for the full count. In a quiet bout D. Annesley (Shannon) did the major portion of the leading against AV. Strange (Palmerston North, to gain the decision. A display of hard-hitting was forthcoming at the meeting of E. Hubbard (Palmerston North) and A. Duncan (Stanway), both lads seeking a knock-out. Hubbard shaded bis opponent in the first two rounds, and although Duncan came hack vigorously in the closing stages the local lad took the decision.

R. Farrow (Marton), a two-handed boxer. was opposed to O. Gibbons (Eeilding) in a* special bout and it furnished a spirited display between two good boys. Farrow carried the attack to his opponent in the late stages and this brought him the victory. They were a well matched pair. Two local lads. J. Collins (8.8) and A. Johnson (9.1), were opposed to one another, and the former, after being in arrears in the early stages, piled up the points in the third round to run out the winner. A. Cantwell (Feilding) and W. Porter (Shannon) made tlieir bout very willing, and although the verdict went to Cantwell there was little in it, much of the winner’s right handed work not being as effective as it appeared to he. The officials responsible for the control of the fixture were: —Referee, Mr L Potipard ; judges, Messrs J. Lomsson and TO. R. Wimsett; time-keepers, Mr R. R. Morton
