VICTORY TO MAORIS
TOOWOOMBA TROUNCED. (United Press Association. —By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) BRISBANE, July 17. The New Zealand Maori footballers beat Toowoomba to-day by 35 points to 13. There were 3000 spectators and the gate takings amounted to £l7O. Mr Job Stone, who captained Toowoomba against the Maoris in 1888, kicked off. The teams were: — Maoris.—Full-back, G. Nepia; threequarters, Phillips, Hemi, J. McDonald ; five-eighths, Ngaia and J. Reedy ; half-back, H. Harrison; forwards, K. Reedy. Whiu, Kershaw, P. Smith, ■\Vhiteley, G. Harrison, Broderick and Mataira. Toowoomba. Full-back, Garthe; three-quarters, Meibusch, Hayes, Thorne, McDonald ; five-eighth, Ingram; half-baSk, W. Buss; forwards, Newman, Lavers, Hogg, Kelly, Browne, Ritter, Green, Birmingham. The Maoris early attacked and Hemi, kicked a penalty goal. Toowoomba equalled when McDonald gathered in the ball and beat Phillips. YVhiteley put the Maoris ahead when he beat three defenders to score a great try; Hemi goaled. After . Hemi had been disallowed a penalty goal because forwards were in front, he finished off a movement started by Harrison and Reedy and converted his own try. The Maoris were now playing spectacular football and ten men handled for Phillips to score. The half-time score was:— Maoris 16 Toowoomba 3 Toowoomba made a better showing in the second spell, but the Maoris, particularly in the closing stages played fine football. One of the best tries was scored by McDonald, who finished off a brilliant movement. The final score was:— Maoris 35 Toowoomba 13 A feature of the match was a grand display of half-back play by H. Harrison. He was in every attack, did well on defence and generally delighted critics. Like most country centres, Topwoomba are difficult to beat on theii home ground. They played above themselves to-day, so the Maoris’ margin of 22 points represents a good display. The bustling tactics of the local players worried the Maoris generally, but they attacked through the forwards to get on top. If Harrison’s display surprised, so did Ngaia’s. Hemi was off form except with his boot, which has notched him nearly 50 points to date. Another Maori find was Broderick, who was playing his first game. He is sure to he picked to play against Queensland on Saturday. The Maoris are still worried over possession. They were beaten to-day in scrums and line-outs. The fiveeighth problem is still a problem, too, as Reedy failed to play as well as was expected.
