EXTRACTS FROM “STANDARD.” JULY 18, 1905. A meeting of settlers interested was being called to consider the raising of a special loan to carry out protective measures along the bank of the Oroua River at Kai l\\i, Awahuri. The river was threatening to cat through its banks and reach a lagoon at the Maori pa and then course down past the Awahuri dairy factory. A Papal encyclical to the Italian bishops uiged Roman Catholics to prepare for a light with Socialism by active and organised participation in political life. Three laymen had been appointed to report on the best means ot accomplishing the Pope’s object. A herd of dairy cows which had been sold at Karero bad realised £8 10a to £lO cadi.
The l'oxton Racing Club bad shown a profit of £2125 on the year’s working. A possible disturbance among the natives at Samoa had passed without difficulty. The German Governor had dissolved the Native Government.

McMinn (captain), fckelly. Whisker, Dutlcr, Galloway, Smith, 11cNae. The sum of £10.000,000 was lioing spent on the docks at Antwerp which were to be tlio largest, in tlie world when the improvements were completed.
