MASSEY COLLEGE WIN.

DEFEAT OF VICTORIA COLLEGE. WELLINGTON, July 18. Massey College beat Victoria College by 10 points, all scored in the first quarter of an hour, to nil, yesterday afternoon. Victoria College did most of the attacking throughout the game, but were unable to overcome the Massey College defence. The Palmerston North team was clearly the heavier, and it was only in the loose that the Victoria team could match them. Play started off brightly and in traditional University Rugby style, with bright passing rushes by both sides, but the standard gradually fell as time wore on, and it was only in the closing stages that play again livened up. The teams were as follow : Massey College.—Wishart, Sherratt, Thurston, Early, Ball, Harper, Blyth, Waller, Bishop, Barker, Boswell, AVaters, Rees, Lyall, Lewes. Victoria College. - Tricklebank, O’Regan, AVild, Harpur, Overton, Paul, Rae, AVilson, Chesterman. Eade, Gibbons, Blacker, Russell, McKenzie, Jackson. Keen play marked the opening of the game, and Harpur had an unsuccessful “pot” when well inside the Massey twenty-five. Then Ball broke away, and dribbling down the field, allowed AA aters to score. Thurston converted. Massey College 5, Victoria College 0. A few minutes later. Rees broke through a. loose scrum, and ran around to score near the posts. Thurston again converted. AUctoria were awarded' a free-kick, wide out. but Tricklebailk’s effort lacked elevation. Passing by the Victoria College backs almost let them across the line, but a bad pass , ruined the movement. Another free kick was missed, but AUctoria maintained the pressure, being checked by the staunch Massev defence. AYhen in a handy position Victoria preferred to dribble rather than pick the ball up, but lost it. and Ma.ssev College moved downfield, with short punts, compelling Victoria to find the line well in their own territory. The position was cleared, and Victoria were in Massey territory when the first spell closed. Ineffectual attacking movements by AGctoria opened the second spell, but Massey College saved a critical position, 'when AA’ild and O’Regan were both grassed right on the line. 1 lav remained for some time around midfield and it was at this stage that AA’atcrs had to leave the field with a nose iniurv. being replaced bv Low. In the latter part of the spell, A ictoria livened up, and made strenuous efforts to score. They remained on the Massev line for some time, but were unable to cross, and when the final whistle blew, they were penned in their own half of the field.
