Mr H. Johanson is visiting Wellington as the Palmerston North delegate to the annual conference of the Kailway Officers’ Institute. The death occurred at Timaru yesterday of Mr Hugh Lowry, who for many years was a prominent and respected member of the business community. The honour of life membership of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union was yesterday conferred on Mr H. J. Richards, of Levin, Mr J. 1). Hall, of Christchurch, and Mr E. J. Betts, of Okaiawa. Mr J. H. Whyte, secretary of the Manawatu Rugby Union, his friends will regret to learn, is confined to his bed suffering from a recurrence of nerve trouble in the back which originally arose as a result of a football injury. Superintendent J. J. Salmon, of the Dunedin City Eire Brigade, will retire on July 31 after completing fifty years in the fire service. Mr Salmon joined the old Dunedin volunteer brigade in 1890 and was appointed superintendent on June 18, 1929. DeputySuperintendent R. H. Price has been appointed superintendent. Mr D. R. Park, of Motueka, has been approached by the Waikawa Maori Committee to consider his nomination as a candidate for the .Southern Maori seat. So far Mr Park has not given a definite answer, but he informed a reporter that he has every intention of standing in the interests of the Nationalist Party.

Captain T. J. Watts, of Newmarket, Auckland, advisory superintendent and secretary of the New Zealand Eire Brigades’ Association, was a visitor to Palmerston North to-day, being on his way to Woodville, where he will attend the jubilee celebrations of the Woodville Eire Brigade. From Woodville Captain Watts proceeds to Wellington on lire brigade business. Mr K. W. Eglinton, who is at present undergoing treatment in a private hospital, was at lust night’s meeting of the Manawatu Rugby Union, of which he is a member, extended an expression of sympathy in his illness, the hope being expressed that he will soon be enjoying his usual health. Mr Eglinton’s friends will be pleased to learn that lie is now making good progress.
