LATE CR. McKELVIE

MANAWATU COUNTY TRIBUTE. A high tribute to the memory of the late Mr J. F. McKelvie, of Carnarvon, was paid at the Manawatu County Council meeting, yesterday, when a resolution expressing the council’s regret at his passing was carried in silence. “We all knew him and during that period we came to have that deep respect for him which was shown at his funeral —the representation there spoke of the man,” stated the chairman (Cr. W. E. Barber), in bringing the subject forward. Although Cr. McKelvie nad been of a retiring disposition, his wide experience aVid ripe judgment had been of the utmost value m the council’s deliberations, particularly in financial matters. His genial character and imperturbable good nature had brought him friends wherever he went, and this had been evidenced by the large number who had followed his remains to their last resting place. As far as tho council was concerned, all the members would look Upon his friendship as one of their j cherished memories. The loss to the council and the district was great, hut 1 to the family the gap mad© was one that could never be filled.

The chairman moved that the council place on record the deep sense of loss that the whole community felt at the passing of Cr. McKelvie and also its high appreciation of the long and valued services he had rendered to the ratepayers of the Manawatu County, both as a councillor and a settler. “To the family the council expresses its sincere and heartfelt sympathy in its irreparable loss,” the motion added. The motion was seconded by Cr. D. W. Reid and carried in silence.

The ICairanga County Council wrote conveying to the council its sympathy at the passing of Cr. McKelvie. The letter stated that it was realised that Mr McKelvie would be missed on account of his long association with the Manawatu County Council and the valuable service he had rendered the ratepayers of the county and the surrounding districts.
