DUEL AT AUCKLAND
WITH NAKED S'WORDS. ENGLISHMAN AND FOREIGNER. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND.. July 16. A duel with naked swords is reported to have been fought in Auckland last Friday night. The victor in the contest was a former English Army officer, who with his sword nicked the upper arm of his opponent, who thereupon withdrew. The dispute which led to the duel arose in an hotel between the Englishman and a stranger said to be a foreigner, who made a grossly insulting remark about King George. The Englishman told him lie would not sully his hands by striking him, and challenged him to a duel, which the foreigner readily accepted.
A duelling ground was found in a room on the top floor of a city building Soconds were appointed and, coats and collars having been removed, the fight began, duelling swords being used. They fought for several minutes and neither gained the advantage until the Englishman ran his sword through the fleshy part of his antagonist’s arm. Honour being .satisfied, the contest so ended.
