PERSONAL.
Advice was to-day received by the Manawatu and West Coast A. and P. Association that His Excellency the Governor-General, Lord Galway, had consented to accept the position of patron of the Association. Mr L. B. Wall, of Kairanga, was to-day appointed by the Manawatu and Weist Coast A. and P. Association as its representative on the electoral committee of the New Zealand Meat Board.
The Manawatu and "West Coast A. and P. Association’s general committee to-day passed a resolution congratulating Mr L. J. Wild, principal of the Feilding Agricultural High School, on his re-election as president of the Royal Agricultural Society. Mr S. L. P. Free, of Masterton, is visiting Palmerston North this evening to meet his son, Major C. W. Free, M.C. of the Guides Cavalry, India, who is at present visiting the Dominion with Mrs Free. Mr A. C. Munro, of Ohingaiti, a newly elected district member, was welcomed to the meeting of the general committee of the Manawatu and West Coast A. and P. Association todav, and was elected a life member on the’motion of the president (Mr Jos. Batchelar), who expressed appreciation of Mr Munro's activities. Mr W. Park, a former Mayor of Palmerston North, was tp-day nominated as an honorary life member of the Manawatu and West Coast A. and P. Association, it being stated at a meeting of the general committee that Mr Park was one of tho oldest members and had been a loyal supporter of the association for many years. Mr P. R. McMahon, M. Agr. Sc., of Palmerston North, who has been a student at Massey College for the past five years, leaves New Zealand in August for Leeds, England, under the tenure of a Macmillan : Brown agricultural research scholarship to further his studies. Mr McMahon expects to be away from the Dominion for about two years. He is a former pupil of the Palmerston North Boys’ High School. Sympathy with Mr W. McKenzie, of Palmerston North, a former president of the association, who is at present ill in a private hospital at Wellington, was expressed to-day at a meeting of the Manawatu and West Coast A. and P. Association’s general committee, which decided to forward him a letter conveying those sentiments.
The general committee of the Alanawatu and West Coast A. and P. Association, to-day, passed a resolution of condolence with the relatives of the late Mr J. F. McKelvie, of Carnarvon. The president (Mr Jos. Batchelar) stated that Mr McKelvie had been a very active member of the association, a familiar figure in the ring, a prominent exhibitor of fat stock and responsible for fine displays of vegetables at the Winter Shows.
Air John Stephen Hartley, who died at Wanganui recently, was an old settler of Rangitikei and for many years past had been a well-known figures in that district. It is worthy of note that he was the first child born on the Alanawatu River and for 18 years worked for his parents. He then worked on the surveying of the Mar-ton-AVanganui railway line and later was well remembered as a stockman driving cattle up and down the river. Air Hartley lived in the Rangitikei district for 67 years. He leaves a wife and family. He is the brother of Mra Parker, of Papatoetoe, Air C. Hartley, of Rata, and Mr H. Hartley, of Foxton.
Resolutions of condolence were today passed by the Alanawatu and West Coast A. and P. Association’s general committee with the relatives of the late Alessrs C. E. Gooseman (secretary of the Waikato A.'and P. Association), W. D. Vickers (formerly the association’s district member for Levin), T. R. Whisker (Parewanui), Airs W. A. Grace (of Wanganui, a sister of Air B. C. Eglinton, who is a member of the association) and Airs Coates (mother of Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates). The funeral of the late Air AV. G. \ r ickers took place at Levin on Sunday, when: the high esteem in which the deceased gentleman had been held was reflected in the large number of people from near and far who attended to pay their last respects, some having come from Pahiatua, Dannevirke, Taihape, Marton, Feilding, Palmerston Nortn, Featherston, and AVellington. A short service was held at St. Alary’s Anglican Church prior to the cortege proceeding to the cemetery, Rev. J. C. Davies conducting both services. Among the many beautiful floral tributes, which were on a lorry, were wreaths from the Alanawatu and AVest Coast A. and P. Association and the Levin branch of the Alanawatu Hunt Club.
