RANGIOTU.
(From Our Own Corresponded. 1 RANGIOTU, July 15. The Women’6 Institute held a pleasant social and dance in the hall last Friday, when there was an excellent attendance. Music was supplied by a professional orchestra, the duties of M.G. being carried out by Mr J. Baker, of Bainesse. The ladies’ social committee were in charge of the splendid supper arrangements. Several vocal and elocutionary nurnbeis were contributed by Miss E. Bcrkahn and Miss S. Croud. Miss M. Simmons and Mr A. Jennings won the Monte Carlo waltz, and the lucky spot waltz was won by Miss V. Ryan (Bainessc) and Mr A. Jennings, while a novelty dance (the train v/altz) was won by Miss Cairns (Baincsscl and Mr L. Beard. A compotitiun was won by Mrs Cooksley (Mangawhata). Disappointment was felt by a large number of football enthusiasts who had gathered on the local ground, on Saturday, to witness the Rongotca-Huia junior match, owing to the former failing to field a team. Huia thereby winning by default. Football in the sub-union has been somewhat curtailed this season, owing to several teams in tho junior grade withdrawing from the compctiHon in the early stages of the fixtures. With Rongotca unavoidably unable to fulfil their engagement scheduled for Saturday the position becomes more unfavourable for the welfare of young and promising players particularly and the code generally in the sub-union.
A fast and interesting game was played at Rangiotu on Friday afternoon,' when the local schoolgirls’ basketball team defeated Kopane by the narrow margin of 10 goals to 8. For the winners, Enid Gimblctt scored 7 goals, aid Maidy Janet 3; for the losers, Hazel Dorn 3 goals, Dorothy Maneon 3 and Aileen Nix 2. After the match the visitors were the guests of the Rangiotu team at afternoon ten. The 15 team of the Rangiotu Ladies’ Basketball Club defeated the Rongotea B team on the local ground last week by 10 goals to 5. The competition has reached an interesting stage following the defeat of Rongotea, resulting in Rangiotu and Taikorea bcinft equal on the ladder for the championship honours.
