CITY RELIEF WORKS.
A DETAILED STATEMENT. Reporting to last evening’s meeting of the Palmerston North City Council on work being carried out by No. 5 scheme labour, the city engineer (Mr J. R. Hughes) gave the following outline: —Reserves: Men are now employed on extending the back area of the Sportsground at the rear of the "stables, excavating, levelling and forming a new roadway. Approximately six men are engaged on general work in the Esplanade. Bledisloe Park: A few men were recently engaged in constructing protection work in the Tiritea stream where serious erosion was taking place. This work is now finished. Anzac Park: Men are employed in digging holes for tree planting. Boundary Road: Footpath formation from Heretaunga Street to Rangitikei Street, on the south side. Takaro Park : Formation of playing area. Hokowhitu Domain: This work is almost finished, but owing to continual rain the men have been taken off in the meantime. Rewa Street: The men recently employed on the domain are now engaged on cleaning up the sides of the roadway. Stanley Avenue: Similar work is being done here in trimming up the sides of lawns. No. 1 Cemetery : General cleaning up. No. 2 Cemetery: Formation of new paths and roadway extensions. Depot: Several elderly men are retained in the depot doing odd jobs. Manawatu Street : This road being much overgrown, -has become almost a oneway road, owing to lack of traffic. The sides are boijig cut back. Firewood for relief depot: A gang is employed at the bridge site cutting up logs donated by the bridge contractors, and also at the Esplanade where the grounds are about to be extended. The report was referred to the works committee for consideration.
