MAGISTRATE’S COURT.
1 7 Mr 11. M. Watson, S.M., was on the Bench at yesterday’s sitting of the r Magistrate’s Court. 1 For leaving a motor lorry parked in 3 Manchester Street without lights showJ ing, H. W. James, of Feilding, car- . rier, was fined £l, with 10s costs. ) Edwin Ewart, of Feilding, pleaded 3 guilty to a charge of failing to give , way to traffic approaching from the 3 right and was finecl 15s, with IJs costs. 3 A charge that he carried on the 3 business of a second-hand dealer at his 7 shop in Feilding without being the 1 holder of a license under the Second- > Hand Dealers Act, 1905, was pret ferred against William Cocker. Ser- > geant Angland stated that the charge ■ had arisen out of theft of books by a ; juvenile, six of the 12 books stolen ; having been recovered at defendant’s shop, where they had been purchased. ’ It was then found that defendant was t not in possession of a license to buy , and sell second-hand goods, and no rep cord had been made of the transaction. . Defendant explained that he had been ' ignorant of the law and had immediately taken out a license as required. The Magistrate said ho would take a | , lenient view of the case, and entered a fine of 10s, with 10s costs. CIVIL CLAIM. T. C. Collins, Ltd., Feilding (Mr D. C. Cullinane) proceeded agannst Catherine Lynch (Mr D. Mcinnes) to recover the sum of £9, being the value of clothing supplied by plaintiff . company. r lhe claim was that, last < year, acting on instructions in writ- i ing, plaintiff supplied £9 worth of i clothing to the son of Mrs Lynch, who called for and obtained the goods and signed the invoice. Steps were afterwards taken to collect the , money, but the accounts were ignor-j ed. Later, when proceedings were l commenced, it was suggested that the . letter to the plaintiff company was a forgery. Evidence was taken in Wellington and this statesmen was re- | tracted and the admission made that the daughter of defendant, who attended to all her correspondence, had written the order. After hearing the evidence the Magistrate held that the claim had j been proved and gave judgment tor the full amount, plus costs amounting ! to £3 12s.
