The following jnessage lias been received bv The Director-General of the Post and Telegraph Department from the postmaster at IvaitaiaThe twomasted ketch Mehongo, from Hokinnga, is ashore in the breakers at Ahipara Beach, opposite Miss Peed's boardinghouse. The sen is very rough, but the crew of two, Messrs J. 'W. Wray and D. Wellington, arc safe ashore. J lie vessel is lying on a sandy bottom. Salvage operations are being attempted. The vessel was previously named the Neva, of Hokianga. The Mehongo left Hokianga ballasted with sand oil Sunday alternoon and had trouble in clearing the bar. Cape Maria van Diemen was reached last evening, but it was found impossible to get the craft round, and she was forced out to sea bv the weather. The wind increased in violence and the Mehongo mov-ed up and °“ -Ninety Mile Beach all night. The crew were kept busy bailing and bad a perilous and distressing time. At daybreak the vessel was puts id e Beef Point and ran for the most sheltered place in Ahipara Bay.-M aves were breaking right over the Mehongo here as she moved toward the beach broadside on, and came ashore opposite Miss Reed’s accommodation house. The crew were provided with refreshments and drv clothing by Miss Reed, and despite their trying experience suffered no physical harm and veie quite cheerful.
