The prisoner, William Brewer, aged 51, labourer, who escaped from the custody of a warder by jumping from a train near Huntly on the morning of June 1, has not been recaptured. The frequent raids on trout in the River Avon by seagulls are causing concern to the North Canterbury Acclimatisation Society, which is considering making a further appeal to the Christchurch City Council for the society's rangers to be given authority to destroy the birds. Reviewing the situation revealed by the recent high flood in the Manawatu River, Mr E. Fisher, advisory engineer, reported to the Palmerston North River Board to-dav that he considered the condition throughout the district most satisfactory, and in a system consisting of 50 groynes, with onlv four badly damaged, the result could be accepted with gratification. “The most pleasing feature is the total immunity from erosion throughout the whole river district, which is of primary importance, confirming the principle and incidentally the efficacy of the board’s groyne system of works,” Mr Fisher added.
