FARM BUILDINGS

NEW SUBSIDY SCHEME

AVAILABLE TILL DECEMBER

(By Telegraph.—Special to Standard.) WELLINGTON, June 22. The Unemployment Board has had under consideration the of assisting further the re-employment of tradesmen in the building and related trades. An avenue which suggested itself to the board some time ago, states the Minister (Hon. S. G. Smith) was the stimulation of improvements in buildings and equipment in dairv factories and on dairy farmers, which have also been occupying the attention of the Executive Commission of Agriculture from the point of view of improvement in the quality of our dairy produce. With the object of encouraging those engaged in the dairy industry to effect improvements to their plant and buildings, and with a view to stimulating the re-employment of men in the building and related trades, also in the engineering and metal working trades, in which latter groups there are over 1000 men out of work, the board has decided to make available subsidies on a graduated basis for such works as the construction of alterations to, or improvements in, daily factory buildings and milking sheds, concrete yards, etc., on dairy farms, the installation of new dairy plant, and water supply systems. The granting of subsidies is limited to work put in hand by December 31, and will be subject to New Zealand manufactured articles and materials being used wherever practicable. The use of New Zealand pig iron, particularly, is being insisted upon as far as possible. Subsidies will not be granted for the maintenance or repair of existing plant or machinery. Applicants for the subsidy also must await notification of approval before commencing work.

For the purpose of administering the scheme the Department of Agriculture is co-operating by acting as technical adviser. It is making available the services of field officers of the Dairy Division for the purpose of reporting upon applications. In addition to the direct employment which will be created in the building and metal working trades as a result of these subsidies, further employment must accrue in the transport and many other occupations, and the board is of the opinion that the proposed subsidies will be a considerable benefit during the slack winter season in providing employment at their trades for a considerable number of men. Full details of the scheme will be finalised at an early date.
