TRADE WITH JAPAN.
CONSIGNMENTS OF PRODUCE. DUNEDIN,, June 3. An important step in iostering trade between New Zealand and Japan lias been taken with the dispatch ot a sample' shipment oi Otago and Southland butter and cheese and North Island lamb. * When Mr J. Shand, a Dunedin resident, was recently in Japan lie .made inquiries regarding the possibilities or a market for produce from Otago and Southland, and was told that it the goods were of the.quality he represented them to bo there was a possibility of a substantial trade being developed. He was asked to make some small sample shipments of lamb, butter/cheese and pork. After experiencing some difficulty Mr Shand has been able to arrange for the shipment of samples by the steamer Melbourne Maru, which leaves Wellington on June lb llie shipment will comprise samples ot butter and cheese from factories in Otago and Southland. In respect to lamb Mr Shand was unable to procure’ refrigerating space from here to make connection "with A\ clluigton, and was therefore compelled to arrange for a sample of North Island lamb to be forwarded. The shipment lias been arranged by the secretary of the 0.5.1 v. Line, and the samples will be carried free.
