CAPITAL IN ARGENTINA.
BRITAIN’S VAST INTERESTS. The extent to which Great Britain’s interests are bound up in those of Argentina was indicated by Mr Walter Runciman, President of the Board of Trade, in a recent address in London. In Argentina, where British capital amounted to £270.000,000, of which £170,000.000 paid no interest, Britain had a greater interest than in any other foreign country, he said. If Argentina prospered she would buy more /coal and more rolling stock from the United Kingdom, and he hoped she would employ more British shipping to carry these goods. That was not an absurd dream if people would realise the reciprocal basis of international trade. Commenting on these figures, the London Times states that they refer only to the capital employed on the railways. Actually the total volume of British capital in Argentina is very much larger. That invested in industrial and other undertakings is £102,276,000. To this may be added £84,363,000 as representing British investments in Government and corporation loans. Altogether the total of British capital invested in Argentina can be little less than £460,000,000.
