BURDEN OF TAXATION.
A AYORLD COMPARISON. TOTALS PER CAPITA. A table showing the level of taxation on a per capita basis in the prinapal countries of the world and in Australia lias been compiled by, the Federated Taxpayers’ Association of Australia, partly from information supplied by Lord Decies, director of the Income Taxpayers' Society of Great Britain. The table gives the level in 1914 and in each year from 1921 to 1934 inclusive. The 1914 and 1934 figures, with New Zealand included, aro as follow : '
"Comprises Commonwealth and States. In all countries, except the United States, there has been a substantial rise in taxation since pre-war days. From £3 11s 4d, the United Kingdom figure rose to £lB Is lOd in 1921, but the tendency since lias been downward. France’s lowest figure since the war was £5 19s 7d in 1926, but for the next seven years it ranged from about £9 to £lO a head, with a sharp rise in 1934. The United States was able to reach the low figure of £3 16s a head in 1933 after gradual reductions, but the following year saw a sharp rise. *
