CLERGY’S ATTEMPT.
TO BREAK UP GAMBLING SCHOOL. FORESTALLED BY POLICE. Rev. G. W. Pittendrigli (Methodist), Pastor G. Haughan (Baptist) and Major Robinson (Salvation Army) set out on a recent Saturday afternoon to break up a big gambling school at Nundah suburb, Brisbane. They had arranged to start a religious service with the “books” and bettors as congregation. Shortly before the service was due to start, two car loads of police dispersed the school and detectives stood by for the rest of the afternoon to prevent it from reassembling. The school is conducted every race day with from 150 to 200 patrons, and the clergy had decided to accept what they regarded as a challenge to the churches. To drown the shouting of odds, they bad brought along the Salvation Army Band. The ministers were annoyed to have their plans upset, for they claimed that the police should have scattered the school many months ago instead of waiting until others intervened.
