RONGOTEA.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) RONGO'I'EA, June 1. The euchre and dance arranged by the Catholic Social Club, and held m the Coronational Hall on Friday night, was a splendid- success, there being a crowded hall, and pleasurable amusement for all. The euchre prizes were won by Mr 1. Hansen, Mr .1. Heaz, Miss Dyer and Miss M Robinson: Monte Carlo, Mr A. Roberts and Miss M. Sexton. Mr C. Donovan and Mrs L. Hancox; lucky draw, Ml Dear; framed picture, Mrs J. 'laylor. The Gospel Hall, Rongotca, was the scene of a happy gathering on Friday evening, when the annual tea meeting was held. Visitors were present from Palmerston North, Fcilding and the surrounding district, and some difficulty was experienced in seating the company, there being upward of 300 present, making it necessary to have two sittings at the tea. When the tables had been cleared a wav the Sunday school pupils were assembled. and, under the leadership of the superintendent (Mr James Hunt), rendered a programme of Gospel hymns and choruses; also, recitations were given by Noel Lind Dennis Wickham, and Marjory Nutt.' A hymn entitled “Cheerful’ was sweetly sung by Misses Marjory and Ernie Lind. At the conclusion of the programme the opportunity was taken to say farewell to Mr and Mrs E. Buchanan (missionaries), who are returning to India in a few days. Mr N. F. Rowe briefly recalled several incidents of former days, when he and. Mr Buchanan were associated in evangelistic work. Mr T. Lind, of Fcilding, expressed the good wishes of the assembly toward the departing friends and commended to God's care and keeping. Mr L. H. Yarrall also wished Mr and Mrs Buchanan all success in their unselfish ministry. Mr Buchanan, in reply, thanked the speakers and then addressed the children. Mrs Buchanan sang the hymn “Jesus Loves Mo” in Hindustani, much to the delight of the juniors, who responded with hearty applause. Thp meeting closed with prayer. Each child present then received a final gift, of fruit and sweets. , The Rongotca Rugby juniors played Sandon on the local ground on Saturday. The pace was on' from the start, both sides putting plenty of vim into their play. Sandon for the first 20 minutes had Rongotea defending. The latter gradually worked play back to half-way, when Sandon were penalised and Gloyn made a great attempt at a penalty goal, but the ball went slightly astray. From a long kiek down to the black full-back, who was caught in possession, Yorke, the blue winger, who had come up fast, secured the leather to dive over for tho opening try, which lie also converted. Tho home team drove their opponents hack, and hard play followed till half-time. On resuming, Rongotca again went to the attack, and from a series of line-outs and scrums Saxton secured to whip the ball out to Chapman, who cut through speedily and handed on to Duker, to Gloyn, who with an open field before him wont on to ground the leather under the posts, for the best movement in the game. Gloyn jiad no difficulty in converting. Following a determined rush, Jellyman broke through, but when about, to dive over tho lino ho lost the. ball for one of the defenders to forco down. From tho drop out, Sandon took a turn at the attack, and, when within striking range of the goal, were awarded a free kick, which however proved faulty. Both sides wore now feeling the effects of tho pace, but would not case up. Again tho blacks were penalised, but the blues could not increase their lead. Sandon worked their way back, and from a melee secured, and Mullins scored wide out. Rongotca strove hard to make up tho deficit, but a most interesting game closed with Sandon tho winners by 8 points to 5. Rongotca schoolboys were defeated by Taikorea-Glcn Orona by 30 points to 9 on the local ground. Mr Edward Buchanan, who, with Mrs Buchanan, is leaving in a few days to resume missionary work at Kamakcrai, Corinbatore District, Southern India,, is a former Rongotca resident, having been born here, and it is 31 years sinco he first left to labour as a missionary in India.
