AIISS MARY MARTIN. RECITAL AT GREYAIOUTH. Aliss Alary Martin, gold and silver medallist, exhibitioner, and Associate of the Royal College of Alusic, London, who recently gave a very fine violin recital at Palmerston North, on Alay 21 presented at Greymonth a violin and vocal recital. Indicative of the place sho Irakis in the community on the West Coast, Aliss Alartin was greeted by practically, a capacity house at the Greymouth Town Hall, where she was extended a cordial welcome by the Alayor (Mr AV. Aleldrum), who said he felt proud on behalf of the Coast to welcome her back to that centre. Air J. O’Brien, ALP., who replied on Aliss Alartin’s behalf, said he felt sure the people appreciated tire progress she had made since her farewell five years before. It was a matter for pride. Aliss Alartin treated her audience generously in the matter of both instrumental and vocal items, and imparted to each of the compositions an interpretation which was readily recognised and appreciated. The former portion of the evening gave the artiste an opportunity to demonstrate her rich mezzo-soprano voice, and in the choice of items splendid fare was submitted. From the German to tlie Negro spiritual and well-known English songs the presentation was flawless, and the audience showed its appreciation in a definite manner. The violin recital was reminiscent oi Miss Martin’s performance at Pal merston North, the “Spanish .Suite and Alozart and other equally popular compositions l>eing featured. 'I he skill and sympathetic rendition received very high praise from the Press critics, who were enthusiastic regarding the complete performance. “Her rich tone, fluent bowing, and accurate stopping in oven the most florid passages made every item a triumph for her musicianship,” said the Grey Star. Sustained applause and floral gifts were expressive of tire approval of the audience. Aliss Aloiia AlcSherry was the accompanistc. It was a thoroughly enjoyable concert programme.
